$8.1 million, 15-mile repaving project begins on Main Road in Southold

Work has kicked off on an $8.1 million, 15-mile repaving project that stretches from Route 58 to Tuckers Lane in Southold, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.

The project was slated to begin the day after Labor Day, and has commenced on schedule.

Off-peak day and night travel lane shifts and closures are currently taking place on Main Road, the NYSDOT said Tuesday.

Motorists were told to expect  off-peak daytime travel lane shifts and closures on NYS Route 25 between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, eastbound or westbound, the NYSDOT said in a release Tuesday.

“To minimize the impact on motorists, travel lanes are being shifted and a single travel lane in each direction is being maintained wherever possible,” the release stated. “However, single lane alternating direction traffic operations, whereby eastbound drivers are stopped while westbound drivers proceed then vice versa, are being used only where shifting lanes is not possible. In addition, there may be night work between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. Monday through Friday, on a very limited basis where shifting lanes or alternating directional traffic maintenance is not feasible. On-street parking is not permitted during this construction work.”

Motorists have been urged to use alternate routes to avoid travel delays, the release said.

“Pavement operations are expected to take place in either the eastbound and/or westbound directions and on shorter, limited roadway sections of the entire project length, in order to minimize the impact on motorists and residents. However, locations and the direction of operations may switch to accommodate changing construction conditions,” the release stated.

Work to be done includes removing a top layer of distressed pavement and replacing that with new asphalt and fresh pavement markings, including new bike lane striping and more visible pedestrian crosswalks. In addition, audible rumble devices are being installed on the centerline to provide a noise and physical vibration warning to motorists who may stray across into oncoming traffic. The project also includes cleaning and repairing of drainage structures to improve roadway runoff.

The aim is to improve safety and “help maintain the integrity of NY Route 25/Main Road on the North Fork,” the NYSDOT stated.

Work on the project is being done by Intercounty Paving Associates, LLC of Hicksville, New York under contract with the NYSDOT.
